How to read the silver price chart

Last updated

Searches for a silver price chart or silver price history often land on the homepage History tab, which is gold, or treat the dollar closes as a Taiwan qian. The silver line sits under Global metals on the homepage quotes tab, and again on the international page. Its title is Silver (SI=F) history. It plots COMEX silver futures closes in USD per troy ounce. The three buttons are three ways of reading closes, not three boards. This page explains windows, the source and gaps. It does not copy or invent any dollar or TWD print.

Each button is one kind of close

The buttons read 30D, 90D and 1Y. 30D requests period=1M: Yahoo Finance SI=F with interval=1d and range=1mo, daily closes. 90D is period=3M, interval=1d, range=3mo, still daily closes. 1Y is period=1Y, interval=1wk, range=1y, so the points are sparser. It is not every trading day of the year. These windows are not clipped again to exactly 30, 90 or 365 calendar days; the window is that Yahoo range. The homepage and the international page share this chart and /api/silver-history. The first load is 1M.

Each point is that bar’s close, not the open, high or low, and not a candlestick. The readout is the close under the pointer. Times use Taipei. These three windows show the date; 1Y also shows a two-digit year. If the last close is greater than or equal to the first, the line uses the up color. This chart has no Open, high, low or period-change panel, and no 14-row table. Those belong to the gold History tab. Open, high and low on the metals table are the live row. Do not subtract them from the line.

The symbol is SI=F, and gaps stay empty

The series is SI=F from the Yahoo Finance chart API. The source label is the exchange name plus “SI futures via Yahoo Finance.” If Yahoo omits the exchange, silver is still marked COMEX, and the currency is USD. The note under the chart says it is an SI futures reference in USD per troy ounce, and that missing sessions are omitted, never filled in. A missing or invalid close is dropped. Nothing is interpolated. When the period changes, only finite closes greater than zero are kept. Fewer than two points shows Insufficient data. While the next window loads, the panel says it is loading historical data. If the source fails, the panel stays empty. No second line is invented.

A request that is not 1M, 3M or 1Y — for example 1D, 1W or 5Y — falls back to 1M. There is no 5-minute or 30-minute silver chart. If the live card switches to the public spot print XAG/USD because its source is limited, this history line stays on SI=F. It is not redrawn as a spot line, and the spot print is not written into a missing futures point. How the two differ is in Gold spot vs futures. The quote itself is in How to read silver prices.

Do not subtract the gold chart or the ratio

The homepage History tab’s 1D, 1W, 1M, 3M and 1Y, plus the range stats and the 14-row table, are GC=F only. 1D is 5-minute closes and 1W is 30-minute closes. The silver chart has neither button. Gold on the international page also offers only 30D, 90D and 1Y, but that line is GC=F, and its 1Y is also a weekly close. How to read that chart is in How to read the gold price chart. The two lines are not the same instrument. Do not subtract them.

The gold/silver ratio is a gold close divided by a silver close, drawn in the same area. Only its 3Y and 5Y views downsample paired daily closes to a week. That is not this silver line, and the silver 1Y chart is not that sample. Platinum PL=F and palladium PA=F share the three buttons and use other endpoints. The jewelry page’s theoretical buy is TWD per qian, gold only, and it also has 3Y and 5Y. The silver chart is not a shop, bank, recycler or ETF board. If the source is unavailable, no price is invented.

  3. Pick one window30D and 90D are daily closes (1d, ranges 1mo and 3mo). 1Y is a weekly close (1wk, range 1y). There is no 1D or 1W.

Silver price chart FAQ

What does this chart show?

A line of SI=F closes in USD per troy ounce. The readout is the close under the pointer. It is not a candlestick, and it has no open, range high, range low, or 14-row table.

Which contract and source?

A COMEX silver futures reference, symbol SI=F, from the Yahoo Finance chart API. If Yahoo omits the exchange name, it is still marked COMEX. A live row that switches to XAG/USD does not switch this history line.

What do 30D, 90D and 1Y mean?

30D is the 1M daily close (interval 1d, range 1mo). 90D is the 3M daily close (range 3mo). 1Y is the 1Y weekly close (interval 1wk, range 1y). There is no 1D or 1W. Any other period falls back to 1M.

Is this a shop, bank or recycler board?

No. It is also not the gold/silver ratio, not platinum or palladium, and not the jewelry page’s TWD-per-qian theoretical buy. Missing points stay empty. An unavailable source does not get an invented price.
