How to read the gold price chart

Last updated

Searches for a gold price chart often treat the dollar closes as a Taiwan qian, or treat “open” as today’s session open. The history tab on this homepage is a COMEX gold futures reference (GC=F) in USD per troy ounce. The five buttons are five ways of reading closes, not five boards. This page explains windows, stats and gaps. It does not copy or invent any dollar or TWD print.

Each button is one kind of close

Beside 1D the period definition says “Latest complete session · 5-minute intervals,” and the table interval is 5m. The points are 5-minute closes within 24 hours of the latest print. Missing minutes stay missing. They are not replaced with an exchange’s official open and close. 1W says “5 trading days · 30-minute intervals,” and the interval is 30m. Those are still closes, not daily bars.

1M says “1 month · daily close,” interval 1d. 3M says “3 months · daily close.” 1Y says “1 year · weekly close,” interval 1wk. It is not every trading day of the year. On the international page the gold chart offers only 30D, 90D and 1Y, which are 1M, 3M and 1Y here. That 1Y is also a weekly close. That page has no 1D or 1W.

The range stats compare closes, not the session high

Open on this panel is the first close in the selected window, not the open on the live quote row. Latest is the last close. High and low are the maximum and minimum of those closes, not each bar’s high and low, and not the high and low on the quote table. Period change is latest minus that first close. The percent beside it divides that difference by the first close.

Range position is (latest − low) divided by (high − low), rounded to a whole percent. If high equals low, the panel shows a dash. The table lists at most 14 rows, newest first. Point change is that row’s close versus the previous close in time. It is not the period change. The first point of the whole window has no earlier close, so its point change is 0. If the window is longer than 14 rows, the oldest row on screen can still show a change, because the earlier close sits outside the table. 1D and 1W show minutes; the other windows show the date. Times use Taipei.

Do not subtract the other three charts

The quote tab’s intraday reference chart is a different picture. If that source has no verified intraday series, the cell says so. The history tab’s 1D is not copied in to fill it. If the live card switches to a public spot reference, the history chart stays on GC=F futures. Missing sessions are not filled with the spot print. How the two differ is in Gold spot vs futures.

Silver, platinum and palladium on the same page offer only 30D, 90D and 1Y, still in USD per troy ounce, and missing sessions are omitted. The jewelry page’s theoretical-buy history is TWD per qian using historical FX, and it also has 3Y and 5Y. That is not this dollar chart. Column maths are in How to read the jewelry daily table. If the source is unavailable, the panel stays empty. No line is invented, and nothing here is a shop, bank or recycler board.

HOW TO

Read gold price history on the homepage

Confirm GC=F dollar closes, pick a window, then read the range stats. No prices in these steps.

  1. Check the symbol and unitThe chart is the COMEX gold futures reference, symbol GC=F, currency USD / oz. It is not TWD per qian and not a jewelry board.
  2. Pick one window1D is 5-minute closes over the last 24 hours, 1W is 30-minute closes, 1M and 3M are daily closes, and 1Y is weekly. 30D, 90D and 1Y on the international page are 1M, 3M and 1Y.
  3. Range stats use closes onlyOpen is the first close in the window, not the session open. High and low are the max and min of those closes. Period change is latest minus that first close.
  4. Read point change separatelyThe table shows at most 14 rows, newest first. Point change is versus the previous close in time. It is not the period change beside the chart.
  5. Do not subtract another chartThe intraday chart, a spot fallback, silver, platinum, palladium, and the jewelry TWD theoretical buy are other series. Gaps stay empty, and the series are not subtracted.

Gold price guides

Other explainers on the same topic, already on the guides hub. Methods and units only — not a shop, bank, or recycler trade price.

  1. What is COMEX gold? How to read USD/oz futures and relate them to jewelry quotes.
  2. Gold spot vs futuresGC=F futures first. XAU/USD spot only if that source is limited, and renamed. No basis.
  3. COMEX open vs after-hours quotesClosures, delays and last-valid labels — don’t misread after-hours.

This page only explains chart windows, close-to-close stats and empty gaps. Reference only. It does not provide or invent any USD, TWD, shop, bank or recycler price. Spreads, making charges, tax and fees are excluded. Not investment advice. No Product or Offer.

Gold price chart FAQ

Why is the 1Y line sparser than 1M?

1Y is a weekly close, interval 1wk. 1M and 3M are daily closes. They are not the same density. A turn on one line is not the same trading day as a turn on the other.

Is Open today’s session open?

No. Open on this panel is the first close in the selected window. Open, high and low on the live quote table are a different set. Do not subtract them from the chart high and low.

Can I read the chart as a per-qian price?

No. The chart is a futures close in USD per troy ounce. TWD per qian needs FX and 1 qian = 3.75 g, and that result is still a theoretical reference, not a shop board.

Why does the line break, or the chart stay empty?

A close is omitted when the market is closed, the contract rolls, or the source has no print. Nothing is filled in. If the source is unavailable, the panel says there is no verified history. No second line is invented.
