What a troy ounce is: grams per ounce

Last updated

Searches for how many grams are in one ounce of gold often apply the everyday avoirdupois ounce to an international gold quote. The homepage primary quote says “per troy ounce,” and the weight basis is fixed at 1 oz = 31.1034768 g. That line is a weight, not a dollar print, and not a jewelry, bank, or recycler trade price. This page does not copy or invent a price.

The 1 oz on screen is a troy ounce

The homepage gold quote is labeled “per troy ounce,” and the definition list’s weight basis reads 1 oz = 31.1034768 g. On the international page, gold, silver, platinum and palladium are all USD per troy ounce. Futures codes are GC=F, SI=F, PL=F and PA=F. If a source is limited and the row switches to a public spot reference, XAU/USD, XAG/USD, XPT/USD and XPD/USD still use this same ounce. Only the print changes.

The homepage toolkit’s weight option “troy ounce” uses that same gram count: one troy ounce is converted into qian, then applied to the number you type. Any TWD figure in the tool comes from the recycle quote you entered, not from a board this site posts. The ounce in the global currency converter is this troy ounce as well, not a local settlement unit.

Do not switch in an avoirdupois ounce

An avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams, the ounce used for food and everyday goods. A troy ounce is the precious-metal weight, and this site fixes it at 31.1034768 grams. The two ounces differ by about 9.7%. Dividing a USD-per-ounce figure by 28.349523125 makes the per-gram result about 9.7% higher than this site’s method. That is the wrong unit, not a move in the market.

Do not round 31.1034768 to 31 or 31.1 and then subtract the result from this site’s per-gram figure. The page prints 31.1034768. The gold-units guide covers grams, qian and the Taiwan tael. This page is only the ounce. Hong Kong, Taiwan and shi taels still do not match one another — see how to read global gold quotes.

How it meets grams and a Taiwan qian

This site uses 1 qian = 3.75 grams. 31.1034768 ÷ 3.75 = 8.29426048, so one troy ounce is about 8.294 qian. That is a weight ratio, not a TWD price. TWD per gram is the USD-per-troy-ounce print on screen, times Bank of Taiwan USD spot-sell, divided by 31.1034768. TWD per qian multiplies that by 3.75. If Bank of Taiwan FX is unavailable, the page labels a market fallback. It does not invent the missing rate.

The result is a theoretical reference. Dealer spread, making charges, tax and fees are not included. Do not read the USD figure on the international page as a per-qian price, and do not turn a troy ounce of platinum or silver into a gold recycle board. The full path is in “Today’s gold price / Taiwan qian” and “Reading today’s gold: BOT vs COMEX.” The contract itself is in “What is COMEX gold?”.

HOW TO

Read one ounce with this site’s weight basis

Confirm the ounce on screen is 31.1034768 grams, then restate it in grams or qian. No prices in the steps.

  1. Read the labelThe homepage says “per troy ounce,” and the weight basis is 1 oz = 31.1034768 g. The international page says USD per troy ounce. The toolkit option says “troy ounce.” All three are the same weight.
  2. Do not use the avoirdupois ounceAn avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams. Dividing by it makes the per-gram figure about 9.7% higher. This site does not use that gram count.
  3. Restate as gramsTWD per gram equals this USD-per-troy-ounce print times Bank of Taiwan USD spot-sell, divided by 31.1034768. If FX is missing, the page does not fill a number in.
  4. Then restate as qianOne qian is 3.75 grams, so multiply by 3.75 for TWD per qian. One troy ounce is about 8.294 qian. That is still a theoretical weight conversion, not a shop board.
  5. Other metals share the ounce onlySilver, platinum and palladium USD quotes are also per troy ounce. The weight matches. They do not share the gold recycling formula, and this site does not invent those recycle boards.
